  Stelvio Pass and Dolomites motorcycle tour – day by day

Day 1: Our first day of our Italian Alps Motorcycle Tour starts with a short stretch of highway to reach Lake Como. We stop for a visit to the Moto Guzzi museum & factory. We then head into the mountains by Ballabio, riding up to the top of the Piani Resinelli. The road used to be the setting of an old motorcycle hill climb race back in the 70s and 80s. There’s a Moto Guzzi V11 named Ballabio.  Our route takes us to Chiavenna and up the Maloja pass to Sankt Moritz and then on over the Bernina and Forcola passes into Livigno. There is a long alternative is over the Splugen pass and then the Julierpass into Sankt Moritz.

Day 2: We start our Stelvio Pass Motorcycle Tour by reaching Bormio, a town nested in the valley between the Gavia and Stelvio passes. Our route takes us up and down the Gavia pass on the northern side. This is the most spectacular side. Once we return to Bormio, we start the climb of the Stelvio pass. Once we reach the top it will be lunch time and the top of the pass is a magnificent place for lunch. We then head down the Swiss side of Stelvio, the Umbrail pass. After a gelato stop in Glorenza we head back up the northern side of Stelvio pass. This are the iconic 48 switchbacks. Our route then returns to Livigno for a second night along the Ofen pass.

Day 3:  This is where if day two was horrible weather and we could not do the Stelvio pass, we can have a second chance. Our next hotel is in Merano and Stelvio can be used to get there instead of our normal route. Well, you can do Stelvio again if you so wish. Our route, if everything goes to plan, heads over the Bernina pass into Tirano, over the Aprica pass, then the fast Tonale pass and the over Passo Castrin into Merano for another double night stay.

Day 4:  We ride to visit he top Mountain Museum on the Passo del Rombo on the border with Austria. This remarkable collection of bikes has, if possible, improved since the fire a few years ago. After the visit to the museum we descend back the way we came and tackle the Jaufen and the Pennes passes. Once we get close to Bolzano, we avoid the busy traffic by taking a minor mountain roads back into Merano.

Day 5: We cross into the heart of the Dolomites. From Merano we first explore the Brenta dolomites and lake Molveno, then start the approach to the real thing. We ride by Trento and reach Passo Lavaze before intercepting the Passo Costalunga which will take us to the magnificent Carezza lake. Not far from there we have our hotel in the Fassa valley, the main entrance to the Classic Dolomites.

Day 6: We set off heading north along the SS48 (Strada delle Dolomiti). In Canazei we start the Dolomites pass hopping: The stunning Sella pass, the Gardena pass, a small section of Val Badia and the Valparola pass directly attached to the Falzarego summit. In the presence of excellent weather, we will enjoy the cable car ride to the top of Lagazuoi with breathtaking views over the entire Dolomite range. Once our cable car ride is over, we ride the loop around the Cristallo group of Dolomites and Cortina. View the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (die drei Zinnen), iconic peaks in the Dolomites. Our final passes will be the Passo di Giau and Passo Pordoi. Passo Giau is probably the most beautiful pass of all the Dolomites in our opinion.

Day 7: It’s the last day of our Motorcycle tour of Stelvio and the Dolomites and we must make our way back to Milan. The first part of the day will be spent enjoying the shores of lake Garda, lake Ledro and lake Iseo. We then catch the autostrada for the last hour of riding back into Milano. We drop off the bikes and prepare for an excellent farewell dinner.
