Description

Motorcycle Tour of Sicily – Day by day:

Day 0 (Friday): You should reach the designated hotel in Rome by maximum 4pm. That’s when there will be the welcoming briefing, aperitif and dinner in a local restaurant or trattoria.

Day 1 (Saturday):
After an early pick up of the bikes, we exit Rome on the Via Appia, we ride across the Castelli Romani, view Lake Albano, ride the Lepini mountains and reach the quaint village of Sperlonga for a quick visit, possibly lunch if we are in good time.
>We then keep riding along the coast until we reach Napoli to board the overnight ferry which will take us to Palermo. We shall all have private cabins with en suite bathrooms.

Day 2 (Sunday): We land in Palermo around 7am on a Sunday to start our actual Motorcycle Tour of Sicily. The city traffic will be at the minimum and we shall be able to exit the city with ease. Our first stop will be to view the impressive cathedral in Monreale. After a short visit we shall aim for the splendid beach resort of San Vito lo Capo just in time for lunch.  After lunch we ride the amazing road up to medieval Erice and the scenic road back down into Trapani, overlooking the Egadi islands and the salt pans. We reach Marsala for the overnight stop and enjoy our first Sicilian dinner.

<strong>Day 3 (Monday): Our aim is to reach the Valley of Temples and take an hour visit of the amazing Greek temples that resist here since the 5th Century BC. Our ride takes us across the rolling hills of the Belice valley, the amazing view of the coast from Caltabellotta, and along the very twisty and scenic SS118. After our visit to the temples we find our accommodation by the coastal village of San Leone.

Day 4 (Tuesday): From Agrigento to Siracusa across the centre of Sicily. We aim for the wonderful Roman Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina. No visit to Sicily is complete without witnessing the amazing Roman mosaics it contains. We also pay homage to the Sicilian capital of pottery, Caltagirone. A stop to view the 142 steps all tiled differently. The fit ones can run up and down this amazing staircase, the more relaxed participants can enjoy a coffee and a “cannolo” just by the side of it. The SS124 will then lead us all the way to the island of Ortigia, the baroque heart of Siracusa. We shall spend two nights here. Siracusa is an amazing location.

<strong>Day 5 (Wednesday): We have reached the middle of our motorcycle tour in Sicily and you can take the day off the bikes if you wish. You can enjoy sleeping in, a stroll through the centre of Siracusa and a visit to the archaeological site. Alternatively we offer a ride to Noto, Modica and Ragusa, the 3 baroque gems of Sicily across the Hyblean hills. A very pleasant and short ride to enable everyone to enjoy the town of Siracusa, especially Ortigia, where our hotel is located.

Day 6 (Thursday): Time to tackle “Mongibello”, the Etna volcano and its 3300m (10k feet) of altitude. The road climbing up to Etna South is an incredible ride. Sweeping hairpins and open views among the lava fields make it a ride hard to forget. We then ride the east side of the volcano to reach Piano Provenzana and then end our day in Taormina.

<strong>Day 7 (Friday): After a morning spent viewing Taormina, we ride the scenic SS120, the SS116 and the coastal road SS113 to Cefalù. Three amazing roads.  Cefalù, is another iconic town in the list of “must see” places in Sicily. We have dinner overlooking the Norman cathedral and enjoy a stroll along the beach

Day 8 (Saturday):  Our final day in Sicily, we ride to Castelbuono and visit the targa Florio museum. The Targa Florio was an incredible street race ran by the Florio family across the Madonie Mountains.  Porsche was so successful in it, it used the Targa denomination for their open top 911. After the visit, we ride down from the Madonie Mountains and reach Palermo mid afternoon. We park the bikes safely, and enjoy a short tour of the city.  Our Motorcycle Tour of Sicily is over. Our ferry sets sail towards Napoli at 8pm and tomorrow we ride back to Rome.

Day 9 (Sunday): We land in Napoli on Sunday morning at 7am. An easy ride out of town immediately joining the highway. After a short stint on the autostrada we exit at Caianello and enjoy the SS6 Via Casilina all the way to Monte Cassino. Monte Cassino hosts an incredible Benedictine Abbey which was destroyed in WW2. It was rebuilt stone by stone over the following decades. After a short visit, we head for the roads of Ciociaria returning to Rome in good time to hand back the bikes.
