Motorcycle tour of Sicily

Day by day:

7 day motorcycle tour of Sicily
map of the Sicily ride in 7 days

Day 0 (Sunday): You should reach Catania by Sunday in order to meet the team at our chosen Hotel in the early afternoon. Our hotel will be within easy reach of the rental. We’ll have an afternoon briefing and finalize the paperwork before an exquisite Sicilian dinner.
If you want a few days beforehand in Catania let us know. We can arrange for you to stay in the same hotel a night before or after the tour.

Etna Volcano motorcycle tour

Day 1 (Monday): After an early pick up of the bikes we exit Catania and head for the top of Mount Etna. The wide sweeping turns that lead us to Etna sud offer incredible views of the coastline and of the incredible lava fields created by the 2003 eruption of this active volcano. Weather and time permitting we can also take the cable car to 2500m and even the 4×4 bus ride to 2900m. This only on a perfect day. If it’s hazy or cloudy there’s no point at all. We then ride around Etna on the east side and reach Taormina in the afternoon in time to spend some time in this exclusive town.

Tour Sicily by Motorcycle - Taormina

Day 2 (Tuesday): After a unmissable visit to the ancient theatre, we get on our bikes and head west over the Nebrodi mountains. We reach the coast and ride along the northern coast of Sicily to reach beautiful Cefalù staying right on the seafront and within walking distance of the remarkable Norman cathedral.

Day 3 (Wednesday): We ride along the roads that was once the Targa Florio circuit. Targa has been linked to the open top Porsche 911, the targa roof. This because Porsche won this road race many times in its past.  The roads are fantastically twisty and the views over the coastline really quite stunning. We reach the outskirts of Palermo in the afternoon passing through the infamous Corleone. Nothing really there to see there but the name evokes scenes from the Godfather movie, as well as more recent mafia events and thankfully arrests. We don’t go into Palermo for two reasons. You need minimum a full day to just start seeing Palermo. Riding in and out for just one night just puts you through its lively traffic and nothing else. We stay near Monreale and its amazing cathedral, with a view over Palermo.  If you desperately want to visit Palermo, and we highly recommend it, you should plan it before or after the tour.  You’ll thank us : )

motorcycle tour of Sicily - san vito lo capo

Day 4 (Thursday): So after a visit to Monreale cathedral we’ll be ready to head for the hills. We ride to Scopello, to San Vito lo Capo and to medieval Erice before finishing our day in Marsala where a very interesting winery visit and tasting awaits us. Erice is an amazing little village on top of an isolated hill top overlooking Trapani. It’s a medieval gem in an otherwise baroque rich island. Marsala is the furthest western point of Sicily and where general Garibaldi started his campaign to unify Italy in 1860. We stay near the winery, so first we drop off the bikes, get changed and then enjoy the experience.

Ride a motorcycle in Sicily - Valley of Temples

Day 5 (Friday):We leave Marsala and head east towards the inland of Sicily. We cross vineyards for acres and acres until we reach an area called Belice. In 1968 this area was hit by a very strong earthquake which destroyed many towns and villages. Some were never rebuilt and settlements simply moved location. After a visit to the greatest modern art installation in Europe, we ride the hills and twisties all the way to Agrigento to view the valley of temples at dusk. We stay the night in a small fishing village by the coast with excellent restaurants.

motorcycle tour of Sicily - Valle del Belice

Day 6 (Saturday): We set off inland and head for the remarkable Roman Villa del Casale near Piazza Armerina. After visit and lunch we head for the capital of Sicilian pottery, Caltagirone. Running up and down the 142 all differently tiled steps in Caltagirone is quite entertaining to watch whilst having a coffee : )! Our next ride takes us along the SS124 to Siracusa, and precisely on Ortigia, the island historical centre of Siracusa. A stroll to the cathedral square and an aperitif admiring the mix of an ancient temple converted into a church leaves you in awe. One of the favorite towns on our Sicilian tour.

Day 7 (Sunday): Sundays are quiet starts even in Italy. we take a loop ride of the baroque gems, Noto, Modica and Ragusa Ibla. The 1693 earthquake completely destroyed most of the towns in this area. So everything was practically all rebuilt from scratch. The response to this tragedy became and incredible opportunity and produced what is known as the Sicilian Baroque architecture. The towns offer classical beauty set in the Hyblean hills. A very rewarding ride, especially in spring.  From Ragusa we then ride back to our starting hotel in Catania and enjoy our farewell dinner. Our last chore is to return the bikes on Monday morning and then you’ll be free to go.
